You can spend the night in the old beautiful mansion or in the newly restored estate keepers house. The oldest barn has been made into a restaurant and bar. Specially hired maids and a good cook makes sure that the food is excellent, that every need is taken care of and the maintenance of all the beautiful rooms in the mansion.
Historical facts about the estate:
The Hårstad estate was founded as a farm as early as in the iron age. From then on, the farm has been run continuously to this day. Before 1660 all of Hårstad was royal property. After 1660 the local church owned a part of the estate.
Until 1877 the Hårstad estate was owned by Norwegians, that year the estate was sold to an Englishman by the name Mr. James S. Walker. In 1883 the estate was sold yet again to Mr. William Archer, also English. In 1896 he sold Hårstad estate to a Mr. L. K. Rics. He was the owner until 1914 when the Norwegian Mr. Emil Ekker bought the estate. The Hårstad estate was once again "Norwegian". Ekkers widow sold the estate to Mr. Johannes Seierstad Bødker in 1937. He then began to restore and repair the old mansion and the other buildings at the estate. As one of the first farms in Bindal, they bought the first tractor in the 1930's Shipbroker Mr. Thomas Olsen bought the estate in 1959, and the Hårstad estate has since then stayed in the Olsen family.
Other historical fun facts:
The well-known Norwegian polar scientist and pioneer Mr. Otto Neumann K. Sverdrup was born at the Hårstad estate October 31 st. 1854. He is most famous for the skiing expedition across Greenland with another polar pioneer Mr. Fridtjof Nansen, and as captain on the polar ship "Fram" to the North Pole.
